Eveline van Leeuwen is a graduate of the University of Otago, Christchurch, where she completed her Doctor of Philosophy in 2022. Her doctoral thesis, titled 'Oxidative stress and redox regulation of the blood-brain barrier,' was conducted in the Department of Pathology and Biomedical Science and the Centre for Free Radical Research. The research examined the impact of oxidative stress on the blood-brain barrier, with a specific PhD project on oxidative stress and redox regulation of the cytoskeleton. Supervisors included Mark Hampton, Margreet Vissers, and Leon C. D. Smyth. Prior to or alongside her PhD studies, she held a Master of Science degree. As a postgraduate student in the department, she contributed to research in redox biology and medicine. Following graduation, she is listed as an alumnus of the Centre for Redox Biology and Medicine.
van Leeuwen's research specializations include redox signalling, oxidative stress, and blood-brain barrier function. She is first author on 'Redox signalling and regulation of the blood-brain barrier' published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences in 2020, which details the regulatory mechanisms of redox processes in the blood-brain barrier. Another key publication is 'Hypothiocyanous Acid Disrupts the Barrier Function of Brain Endothelial Cells' in Antioxidants in 2022, demonstrating the disruptive effects of hypothiocyanous acid on brain endothelial cells. Additional contributions include conference presentations at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference, such as 'Hypothiocyanous acid disrupts brain endothelial barrier integrity' in 2021 and 'Hypothiocyanous acid oxidizes collapsin response mediator protein 2 in brain pericytes' in 2021. She also assisted in sample processing for the study 'Intravenous vitamin C administration to patients with septic shock' published in Critical Care in 2022. Currently, Eveline van Leeuwen works as a Business Analyst at the Centraal Orgaan opvang asielzoekers (COA) in the Netherlands.
